RTI & Behavior: Managing the Defiant and Non-Compliant Student in Grades 3-12

When students are chronically defiant or non-compliant in the classroom, they can disrupt instruction and create great stress for classmates and teachers alike. This full-day workshop is designed to give teachers, support staff, and school administrators strategies that they can use immediately to manage challenging student behavior.

The training includes:

  • a review of research on defiant/non-compliant student behavior and principles of effective classroom management.
  • guidance for teachers in setting up a series of effective classroom-level consequences for misbehavior to prevent low-level problem behaviors from escalating.
  • a review of evidence-based classroom strategies to prevent, defuse, and deescalate serious episodes of student defiance and non-compliance.
  • a focus on helping students to take responsibility for their behaviors through self-monitoring/self-evaluation, behavior contracts, and other methods.
  • ideas for setting goals for improvement and measuring student progress on behavioral interventions.

Participants will also learn how they can access free behavioral intervention and assessment resources on the Internet.

As a result of attending this workshop, participants will:
  • prevent problem student behaviors by identifying and eliminating common ‘triggers’ to defiance and non-compliance.
  • compile a series of classroom-level consequences to be used routinely to prevent emerging behaviors from escalating.
  • choose evidence-based management strategies to address specific types of problem behavior.
  • measure the impact of student behavior intervention plans through methods of progress-monitoring.
  • access free Internet resources to assist in the development and monitoring of student behavior intervention plans.
