RTI & Academics: Helping the Teacher as 'First Responder' With Classroom Intervention and Progress-Monitoring Tools

Classroom teachers are the ‘first responders’ who provide intervention assistance to those students who struggle with academic skills. This workshop clarifies questions about the use of RTI interventions in general-education classrooms.

Participants learn an approach that gives general-education teachers the RTI tools to:

  • define student academic and behavioral problems in clear, specific terms.
  • select appropriate evidence-based interventions that can be used in general-education settings.
  • calculate baseline, set intervention goals, and monitor the student’s progress on RTI intervention using classroom-friendly assessment methods such as Curriculum-Based Measurement, performance checklists, work products, and Daily Behavior Report Cards.
  • record classroom interventions in a manner that fulfills all documentation requirements of RTI.
This workshop will also provides a ‘starter set’ of intervention ideas in reading, math, writing, and study/organization skills that teachers can begin using in their classrooms right away.

NOTE: This workshop can be offered in an elementary-level version (grades K-6) or a secondary-level version (grades 7-12).

As a result of attending this workshop, participants will:
  • define student problems in specific terms that allow for effective problem-solving.
  • have confidence in their selection of evidence-based interventions to match presenting student classroom concerns.
  • use classroom-friendly assessment methods to calculate student baseline, set goals for improvement, and monitor the intervention on an ongoing basis.
  • document classroom interventions in a manner appropriate to the needs of RTI.
